'Dayanand Education Society' was established in 1961.The management team at that time is - Hon. Ranbaji Mandade, Hon. Shantibhai Shah, Hon. Birdichandji Kucheriya, Hon. Manikraoji Sonawane, Hon. Chandrashekhardada Bajpai, Hon. Ramgopalji Rathi. They collected the money to establish our education society from the farmers and merchants. Hon. Late. B. D. Sarje was the first principal of our education society.

This is the leading college and is a independent commerce branch in Marathwada section. The commerce branch was separated from the dayanand education society in 1970. Hon. Shri. Manikraoji Sonawane was the president at that time. Mr. B. M. Nawade was the first principal of the separate commerce college. He worked near about 15 years for our college as a principal from 21-Jun-1965 to 31-Jan-1980.
Commerce education plays a vital role in building nation on sound economic foundation. Commerce education makes the the individual the best producer, distributor and consumer. Commerce education fulfils the need for competition and imaginative leadership. Business, laboratory ,industrial trips, commerce news board, students bank, self employment, spoken English classes ,employment guidance, national service scheme , national student army ,etc. Are the features of dayanand commerce college.

Latur is humming with Business activity from many more decades. In the fifties there were a few high schools, which were giving quality education to the students. These schools were not only giving quality education to the students but they also developed spirit of patriotism due to which number of freedom fighters in the pre-independence era hailed from this place.

It was forty two years ago, when the leading citizens from the different fields of life of Latur area, namely: Late Shri Manikraoji Sonavane, Shri Chandrashekharji Bajpai, Late Shri Keshavraoji Sonavane, Late Shri Ramgopalji Rathi, Late Shri Nathmalji Inani, Shri Shantilalji Shah and Shri Madanlalji Biyani, recognised the need and importance of higher education in order to achieve the overall progress and prosperity of the region.

These dignitaries came together and decided to start a college in Latur. As many of them were followers of “Arya Samaj”, they thought it proper that this education society should be named after the name of Maharshi Dayanand Saraswati. Hence the name “Dayanand Education Society” is given.

The necessary fund of Rs.1.25 Lacs was to be deposited in the Marathwada University, Aurangabad, to start the college, which was raised by these people within a short period of 15 days only. The enthusiasm was so high that the citizen of Latur generously contributed to the society.

Late Shri Manikraoji Sonavane who was Chairman of the Market Committee, encouraged the farmers around Latur to contribute whole heartedly to this noble cause. Shri Keshavraoji Sonavane, who was the then Minister in the Government of Maharashtra, took the responsibility of completing formalities at Government level. Shri Chandrashekhar Bajpai, who was the President of the Municipal Council of Latur at that time, took the efforts to make sizable financial contribution from Municipal Council to the Society.

Other members also took active part in the formation of the society. Especially the contribution in fund raising by Late Shri Nathmalji Inani and Shri Madanlalji Biyani was noteworthy.

The modest beginning was the establishment of Dayanand College of Arts, Science and Commerce, Latur, in the year 1961. Foundation stone of the college building was laid down at the auspicious hands of then governor of Maharashtra Shri Shri Prakash. In 1964 the inclusion of Late Shri Raja Narayanlalji Lahoti in the society, gave enormous moral support to the development of the society.

Following are the aims and objectives of the Dayanand Education Society –

1) To start educational institutions imparting Higher Education and Secondary Education.

2) To work in co-operation with other established institutions in the field of education like D.A.V. society, New Delhi.

3) To take under its control such other institution as are devoted to education.

4) To develop the property of the trust, likewise to spend the modern facilities and also to make necessary alterations, modifications and to make new constructions for the purpose of developing this society and its colleges in the field of education.

5) To promote the activities which are necessary for the welfare of student.

6) To promote educational, medical engineering and professional education and social activity in general.

7) To lend assistance to the needy and economically weaker students particularly in the field of education etc.

8) To do any other activities which shall be meant for enrichment of the students and human beings in general. So also to make necessary arrangement for the enrichment of the public in general.

10)To construct shopping complex and other suitable construction for raising income to the society.

11)To promote sports activity and to do necessary things in that regard. Also construct buildings and grounds for the development of the sports.

Initially this college was housed in Puranmal Lahoti Technical School where now collector’s office is there. Late Mr.Manikraoji Sonwane was the founder President of this education society. The first Principal of this combine college was Mr.Sarje B.D.

Right from the beginning commerce faculty of this composite college was famous because of its quality education. This educational quality was due to sound academicians like Mr.C.G.Karandikar (M.A.Eco., M.Com., F.R.Eco., S.(London)) who happened to be the Principal of composite college. It will not be out of space if we state that Mr.Shivraj Patil Chakurkar, former speaker of Loksabha happened to be the honourable visiting faculty to teach Mercantile Law at B.Com.III year level. In 1967 Dayanand College of Science was separated from this composite college.

In 1970, the Dayanand College of Arts and Dayanand College of Commerce were formally separated from each other. However, we started independent functioning from June 1971 onwards. At that time separation of the college, our management visualised following goals and objectives –

1) To create entrepreneurial mindset of the students.

2) To create managerial cadre.

3) To provide manpower for financial administration to industry, trade, commerce, and banking.

4) To develop multi-dimensional personality of the students.

Late Mr.B.M.Nawade became the first Principal of independent Dayanand College of Commerce. Immediately after separation this college got Post-graduation classes on full grant basis from 1972.

During the last three decades it is heartening to note that this college has developed vertically and horizontally. We are pleased to place on record that this college has produced many commerce graduate/post-graduate students.
